What Are You Waiting For?
Imagine, what would happen if we actually did all the things that we said we were going to do?

This weekends brunch is inspired by Chanel 4’s Eat The Week with Iceland. Each week there is a new episode that showcases recipe ideas for busy families.
This morning I was invited to attend a talk with Jamie Oliver to discuss child hood obesity and the governments new ‘Plan for Action’. The panel was presented by channel 4’s Jackie Long. Jamie was also joined by Dr Dawn Harper, Olympic gold medalist, James Cracknell and Justine Roberts, CEO & Founder of Mumsnet. Jamie has been campaigning for the government to do more to tackle this national health problem. He wants to ensure that parents are well informed about nutrition, as well as suggesting that the government should bring in laws for food suppliers and manufactures, that will help us all to make healthier food choices. Earlier this year the government released their strategy for ‘Childhood Obesity : A plan for action‘ which was created to significantly reduce childhood obesity and to implement radical change across the country. However, the strategy has been hugely criticised and described as a ‘diluted version’ of what campaigners had hoped for. Jamie Oliver is featured in tonight Dispatches programme on channel 4, he speaks very passionately about his …
Last weekend we visited Bournemouth for a mini break by the sea. It’s half term so we really wanted to spend some time together as a family and take a break from work. One of my favourite things about holidays is the food! At home I love cooking but on holiday we go out for dinner and of course enjoy the local favourites. You can’t beat fish and chips in newspaper on the coast. We also discovered a new restaurant called The Skinny Kitchen. You may have already seen a mouth watering stack of pancakes on my Instagram feed. After a quick glance at the menu, I had high expectations for our meal and we were not disappointed. The food was fantastic! Their impressive smoothie and juice menu has everything a healthy gal could ask for. I went for this Acai berry blast and a spicy bean chilli. Oh my . . . the desserts! We ordered the sweet potato brownie and banana bread to share. (I definitely didn’t want to share either of them, …
This morning Jude and I made pancakes for breakfast. Like most four year olds, Jude has his favourite dishes but I try and encourage him to eat a variety of different things. He loves helping me in the kitchen and I love watching him discover new foods. Recently, I’ve noticed that Jude has become more aware of what he’s eating. (more fussy!) For examples, I’ve always used fresh basil in our pasta sauce and after almost three years of eating it, Jude has started to pick out tiny pieces of basil and push them to the side of his plate. I’ve asked Jude to help me to make some of his favourite meals, in the hope that he might try some new foods. If nothing else, I’m sure that he’ll enjoy making lots of mess! Here is our recipe for Banana & Blueberry Pancakes. . . Ingredients – 1 cup Self Raising Flour – 1 cup Soya Milk – 1/2 tsp Baking Powder – 1 Banana – 1 Large Handful of Blueberries Method – Heat …
Winter has a bad reputation when it comes to health & wellness. There’s less daylight each day so we spend less time outside, and more time snuggled up on the couch with Netflix and a jar of Nutella. (maybe that’s just me!) The lack of sunshine not only affects how active we are but also has huge effect on our mood too. Most of us over indulge at Christmas time on festive foods, Prosecco and endless amounts of chocolate. Then the New Year starts and we’re hibernate in chunky knitwear, searching online for flights to the sun, and it seems even colder at home without the Christmas tree lights. Okay, so it might not seem like the most inspiring time of the year but as an eternal optimist, here is my guide to feeling great this winter. Resolutions – It’s February, time to revisit those resolutions. Be positive! Instead of making a list of things that you’re going to give up, instead create a list of things that you ARE going to do. I’ve never used protein powders before but with all my extra training this month, I real need to make sure that I’m getting enough protein each day. I’m leading a bootcamp each morning throughout January as well as training for the Cambridge half marathon. This morning I tried Neat nutrition‘s Berry flavoured Whey powder. I made this pink shake with soya milk and I also added a banana. It was delicious! & the perfect fuel before bootcamp!
This one is delicious !!! 1/2 a tsp Cinnamon 1/2 a tsp Cocoa Almond Milk 1 Banana One tsp of Almond Butter One tsp of Nutella 2 Ice Cubes I love this smoothie as a sweet treat, it’s the perfect recovery drink after a tough workout. I have been gradually increasing my running milage over the last few weeks as I am training for the February Cambridge half marathon. All these extra miles are being fuelled by my secret weapon . . . Nutella 🙂
Have you even been tempted to become a vegan? I have a few vegan friends & although these days it seems like all of the ‘cool kids’ are giving it a go, it’s not as easy as simply ordering a bean burger & switching to soya. Veganism isn’t just about what you eat, it causes you to be more mindful about where your food comes from and how it was produced. A common misconception, is that vegan diets are boring and that all vegans are hipsters & yogis, that only eat nuts! The reality is that there are hundreds of foods available for vegans. Another response to veganism is that it is ‘unhealthy’. ‘Surely you need to eat meat for iron & protein etc.’ A trusted vegan friend of mine told me that she actually became a vegan after studying nutrition & microbiology for years, I think I’ll take my chances. For the next 10 days I will be saying goodbye to my beloved Nutella & attempting to eat a completely Vegan diet. Day 1. …
Soya Milk, Strawberries, Blueberries, Banana & Mint. This mornings strawberry milkshake. . . . Top Tip – I always have berries in the freezer, that way if I haven’t been shopping and we’re out of fresh fruit, I can just add a few frozen berries to a smoothie or to my porridge etc. Jude calls this one ‘Strawberry yoghurt juice’ 🙂 He’s not a big fan of bananas, so this is a good way for me to sneak them into his diet. (I other hand love bananas, they are by far the most under rated fruit!)
